1/11/20--After a bill in 2016 regulating growing facilities and allowing for the licensing of doctors and pharmacies that the use of medical marijuana became viable in the state, it took two and a half years before medical marijuana became available to the public in Louisiana. Health insurance does not cover medical marijuana, and the Louisiana Board of Pharmacy, which licenses and regulates the pharmacies that dispense marijuana products, has received complaints about potential patients’ lack of access to the treatment. 7/3/18--Medical marijuana is still a risky, early stage business here in Louisiana, but a Shreveport counselor is teaming up with a group of doctors to open north Louisiana’s first medical marijuana clinic. Medical marijuana contract will give LSU at least $3.4M

6/22/17--The first medical marijuana production deal struck in Louisiana is expected to bring the state's flagship university at least $3.4 million over five years. In its bid offer, the contractor agreed to pay that amount or 10 percent of gross receipts, whichever is higher, to the LSU Ag Center for permission to grow medical marijuana. Las Vegas-based GB Sciences Inc. also has agreed to a $500,000 annual contribution for research. Read

Can LSU’s medical marijuana operations thrive?

4/10/17--Although seven companies have submitted proposals to handle medical marijuana operations for the LSU Agricultural Center, some bidders question whether the program can prosper under the limitations of the current state law. Others are less pessimistic. LSU is requiring bidders to bear the entire cost for a secure greenhouse and processing facility needed to produce the medication. The AgCenter estimates the program will cost $11.3 million and will need anywhere from four to nine years before revenue outstrips expenses. LSU is looking for medical marijuana farmers

2/4/17--LSU will begin taking offers from contractors to produce marijuana for the state for medical purposes. The law calls for the marijuana to be grown indoors, the facility to be located off LSU's campus, and for students not to be involved. LSU expects to have a contractor hired by June. The first crop is expected to be ready by the end of 2017.
